So, Canada's actually getting an iPhone now!

Way back in November (the 19th, to be exact) of last year, I wrote a short entry complaining about the lack of a legal iPhone in Canada, and it appears that the powers that be in Cupertino have took heed of my advice and finally set up a deal with Rogers.

Seriously though, I'm pretty excited about this. I've been waiting (not so) patiently since June of last year when the iPhone went on sale a few kilometres to the south to finally get my law-abiding hands on one, and it's finally (almost) here. Rogers is being mum on the actual projected release date, saying only that it will be later this year. I've heard grumblings about June, July and the fall, but it's unimportant really. The whole issue with the release date is probably an Apple dictation in keeping with the way they release products -- on sale the day they are announced.

Anyway, the fact that we are getting the iPhone around a year after it initially went on sale sucks. I mean, they've lost a little bit of their cache. Case in point: millions of people in the States have them. Upwards of a million or more people in Canada have the iPhone's bastard little brother the iPod Touch... I mean, the iPhone just isn't as cool as it would have been had it been released last year. Regardless though, I'm getting one. That's for sure.

The English really, really like their booze

It looks like there is quite a storm brewing in London about the right to consume alcohol on public transport. Wait... What?

Seriously, in London you can drink booze on buses, trains and trams, and I'm assuming probably inside churches. I wonder how much of the disparity between North American views on alcohol and European views relate to North America being colonized by the puritanical type?

The Russians came, and conquered

We had a pretty good shot at repeating as World Champions at this year's IIHF World Hockey Championships, held jointly in Quebec City and Halifax. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

In the gold medal game in Quebec City, the Ruskies tuned is to a final of 5 - 4. In another depressing note, the last team to win the World Championships on home ice was the Soviet Union back in 1986. Also depressing, is that this was the first time we as a nation have hosted the Championships, ever. For a tournament that's been pretty much dominated by us in one way or another since 1920, I found that to be quite ridiculous.

Help Firefox set a download record

Mozilla is trying to set a Guiness World Record with the most downloads of any software in one day. They've set up a site where you can "pledge" that you'll download Firefox 3 on Download Day 2008 and help them set the record. I've been an ardent supporter of Firefox since I first started using it in version 0.9.2, even adding a Get Firefox link to the bottom of the first post on this blog.

Even if you don't want to actually pledge to download on that day, if you don't use Firefox now, you should. So, go get the latest version anyway.
