My toothbrush

I came out of my bedroom this morning to find one of my roommate brushing his teeth with the bathroom door open. I took a quick glance and noticed that his toothbrush had the same greenish color as mine. I went back into my room to await my turn in the crapcloset I suddenly realized that said roommate's toothbrush is blue, not green. (This roommate and I share the upstairs bathroom, while the third roomy has the basement bathroom -- so there is only two toothbrushes up there.) I came back out of my room and busted him on it:

Me: Is that my toothbrush?
Him: No.
I pick up his toothbrush and show it to him.
Me: This isn't mine.
Him: Oh, I guess it is yours. Sorry man.

And he couldn't to brush his teeth! Damnit, that was a brand new toothbrush and it cost me $4.00. Needless to say it hit the trash real quick, and his idiocy cost me another $4.00

Out with Ross

I was sitting at home quietly doing nothing at all last night when a buddy of mine from Regina added me to his MSN. Turns out he lives in Calgary too! Sweet. So pretty much the first thing he says to me is "we should go for a beer." How am I supposed to say no to that? So I went and picked him up and we went to Fat's. We couldn't get a table because the Flames were playing at the place was packed. Soooo, we headed to Bob the Fish and proceeded to watch the Flames game. The Flames did their job, winning 5 - 2 over Phoenix, wooo.

Then we went to the Maid and got even more fucked up. I haven't seen this dude in over a year, and we partied like it. Was a good time.

I'm not too coherent right now.

Tequila!

What a night! Again! I love this city! Ok, I just read my entry about last night and I am quite upset with the level of English that I portrayed. I know that I all but abandoned this blog, and have been quite spacey while updating this site, but hell, you (few) people deserve better!

So tonight we went out for $0.25 highballs at Tequila. Myself and roommate Ryan ended up there at about 9:00 because my lazy ass took a hell of a long time to get ready. Anyway, we started drinking at right about 9:00 -- our first order was 9 triple rye and coke's (real triples, not the half shot triples they consider drinks at Tequila on Thursday's) -- grand total of $10. Suhwweeeeettt. Since we only brought $30, we soon realized we were going to need some more money.

Anyway, we had a few more drinks and danced a little before heading back home and getting some more cash. In the meantime we picked up roommate #2, Jaret. As soon as we got back the party was ON! We sat back at the table adjacent from the bar. We ordered a few drinks and sat down, and as soon as we did we got sprayed with a shitload of vodka by the hottie bartenders. Hell yeah!

So we started firing balloons (which we received from the hella-cool balloon man) at the bartenders, and the war started. We must have got sprayed with like $50 worth of alcohol. By this time it's about 10:00 and the $0.25 drinks are over and done with. Being the cheap ass he is, Ryan decided to do a backflip -- off the bar. So he walked up to the hot bartender and said "If I can impress you guys, will you buy me drink?" To which they said "Of course!" So he ran up and did a full backflip off of their bar, and they held up their part of the deal by giving us each a free triple rye and coke.

Whatever. Anyways. The next time I headed up to the bar, the bartender handed me 6 business cards. On them, they say "Come in on Tuesday before 10:30pm and get no line/no cover and a $25 tab." So -- we get $150 worht of free booze as well as $30 worth of free cover ($5 a person * 6). Word.

[Edit: Crap, I forgot to mention the VIP cards we got.. sweeeeeeeet. FYI - Sweet is my internet word of the night.]

After this I run up to the DJ booth and tell the spinner to play The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by Captain Tractor -- and the guy says YES! WTF! SWEET!

By this time Ryan had been at the DJ booth like 5 times and had introduced himself as Woodstock. So the DJ announces "This fucking song is for the Woodstock crew right --- there." and he points at us, and the other dude in the DJ booth puts a spotlight on us. So as soon as the song came on we went NUTS on the dance floor. Both of the bartenders joined us, as well as two of the beer tub girls and a couple of other random hotties. It was us three and about 7 girls dancing - sweet time.

Then we ran out of money and went home, but the night was worth it.

However, Ryan decided he hadn't had enough so we came back home, picked up some more cash then headed to Daily's Liquor Store and picked up a flat (24 for you Saskatchewanites) of Bowen Island for $23.00 -- oh hell yeah! And now that's what I'm drinking.

That was my night, woooooo! Party!

Visitors

I'm going to have a bit of a packed house over the next couple of weeks. On the 14th, my buddy Ken is thinking about coming up for a few days and snowboarding. On the 19th, my sister gets here and she is stickin' around for a week. And on the 21st or 22nd a couple of our friends from Saskatoon are coming to stay with us.

I'm still not completely sure I will be here on the weekend Ken wants to come down, as I might head to somewhere in Saskatchewan for Easter. We'll see.

Character Development

I've begun work on a new piece of software for screenwriters. I don't have a title for it yet, but basically it will help writer's develop their characters and keep track of specific aspects of a character's life, such as: Birth information, hobbies, education history, occupation, etc.

I've found that while developing numerous projects at a time, Ryan (my writing partner) and I tend to forget a lot about the characters we discuss. On top of this, I have a really hard time keeping track of what notebooks (I've got no less than 15 scattered around my place) I write what characters in, and often they end up not being in the same book as the original story idea.

I will release it for free when I have it finished, so keep your eyes open. I'd say I'm about 60% done the first version, which will be very basic.

New blog software?

I'm thinking about switching blog software. I've played around with WordPress a bit, and am still thinking about it. What are you guys using? Are you happy with it? Let me know!

Political blogging

Most people probably don't find the stuff I post here on a (nowhere-near) daily basis even remotely interesting, but whatever, I'll state this anyway.

I've been finding that the majority of blogs around these days are making a lot of comments on the political activities of the day. Which in itself isn't really a bad thing. However, when you have a lot of relatively uninformed young people talking about a lot of things they barely know anything about becomes annoying.

Most of the time when I hit a blog where the first post is a political one I will just abandon quickly, with a few exceptions.

Just had to rant.

Afternoon naps

I'm not usually one to take afternoon naps, but I haven't been feeling all that well today and I kind of just fell asleep on the couch at about 3:00. Once my loud ass roommates succeeded in waking me up during the course of their normal day, I decided to migrate upstairs to my bedroom and continue my nap until about 7:30pm.

I awoke as soon as I heard Jaret (one of my roommates) yell at Ryan "Turn on the fucking hockey game!" That was enough to awake me from my extended power nap and hurry my ass down the stairs to watch the Flames destroy the Ducks. Currently, the score is 3 - 0.

Aside from the hockey, my afternoon nap has left me feeling a lot more refreshed and am actually feeling a little bit better. Afternoon naps rule.

Flames 3 Ducks 0

It's getting awfully close to playoff time, I heard someone today say they believe it will start on the 21st. I can't wait for this city to erupt in playoff fever. Hopefully we can recreate the atmosphere from the last NHL playoff season. How great that would be.

Tonight, Sportsnet aired the final home game to be televised this season. This is a good and bad thing. The bad: No more hockey on free TV. The good: You can always catch the game at any bar on 17th Ave. Hell yeah!

The flames opened up the scoring in the second period with a sweet one time goal by Chris Simon. The third period staretd out with a massive bang, with two goals in the first 37 seconds. Daymond Langkow banged in a perfact pass from Iginla at 0:05 of the third. Kristian Huselius wasted no time showing Anaheim's goalie, Ilja Bryzgalov that he was the Flames' bitch for the evening, pocketing another pass from Iginla at 0:37.

Kiprusoff was (as usual) outstanding, posting his ninth shutout of the season. Awesome playing the week before the playoffs are set to start. I can not wait!

I'm feeling forgotten

For the first few weeks after I moved to Calgary the phone calls from home were quite often. My dad would call when he had absolutely nothing to say:

Dad: "Uhh, How's it going?"
Me: "Not too bad I suppose."
Dad: "I see."

Silence for a solid minute or so.

Me: "Ok, well I'm gonna go now."
Dad: "Have a good one!"

He's such a loser like that, he never has anything to say on the phone. As much as I hate it when he calls like that, I'm starting to miss it. Haha! Fuck, I'm a loser. Anyway, he called every day or two for the first 3 or so weeks I was here, but I haven't heard from him in the entire month of April!

On top of that, my sister who I love talking to hasn't called me for well over a week, nor my mom! Those bitches! (I'm just joking, they're both cool, not bitches.) I'll probably call those slackers tomorrow. But I'm going to hold out on my dad and see how long it takes him to call me. Hehehe.

And I have talken to my brother only once since I moved here, and that was like three days after I got here, so about a month. I'm not too worried about this, because we have a bit of a strained relationship, to say the least. He needs to get over some of his shit before I can be happy enough with him to call him regularly.

I don't know why I'm making a deal of this with myself. I mean, I really shouldn't care too much, but it's weird. Different and weird. Not necessarily bad, but it's a new phenomenon, you knoooooooow?

New job

I had an interview today, and was offered the job on the spot. It's pretty sweet, I'm not going to get into the details exactly, but the company was voted as one of the Top 35 in Canada to work for, which is cool. They are paying me quite generously, which is extra-sweet.

The only drawback is that my commute is 33km round trip. :o Good thing I don't start until 10:00am, so I avoid the rush hour.

Orli's Awakening

In my never ending quest to get everyone I know blogging, I've set up my younger sister, Sam, with a blog of her own blog called Orli's Awakening. It's currently hosted on my domain, but that should change soon. Do me a favor and check it out.

Taco Bell

One of the great things about my moving from Saskatoon to Calgary is the addition of Taco Bell to the list of available fast food restaruants. It is by far my favorite at the moment, and I hit it a couple of times a week, even though there are none within 15 minutes of me.

Taco Bell rules!

New Watch #2

I picked up another new watch this weekend, I've been thinking about grabbing it for a few months now. The Nixon Banks:

Nixon Banks

I'm lovin' it!

Easter in Saskatchewan

I spent my Easter weekend in Saskatchewan. I got to Regina on Friday morning and had brunch with my mom and sister, my roommate Ryan, my buddies Noel and Devin, and Devin's parents. It was fun, but it didn't last very long.

After brunch (which was delicious) myself and Ryan headed to Yorkton. In Yorkton we spent most of our time at Cab spending money that we didn't have. My wardrobe increased mega-fold:

- wesc Hoodie
- wesc Long Sleeve T-Shirt
- Ezekiel Jacket
- Nixon Banks watch, see below

And a few other things, but whatever. We went for Easter supper at my grandparents and then headed for Saskatoon. We stopped in and said hello to both of our parents. I went out for breakfast with my Dad and brother, then crashed out for a few hours before coming back to Calgary.

That was the very condensed version of my weekend.

wtfbbq / omgwtfbbq

When did the term "wtfbbq" and it's relative "omgwtfbbq" become a normal part of internet slang? It's been around for years, and all of a sudden people are using it on MSN, etc.

Weird.

First day of work

Today was the first day of work at my new job. It was supposed to be yesterday, but due to a few circumstances it just wasn't meant to be. No big deal.

Work was good, not great, but good. It will pay the bills (for sure), and I don't hate it yet, so I figure I'll stick it out a bit. Besides, the hours are great! 10 - 6! Sweet.

I don't know what my obsession is with telling next to nothing about my work life. It seems like such an obvious thing to blog about, but I see almost noone doing it. Not sure why, just an observation.

Me again

Me doing what I do best....

Me.

This is an old picture, and actually the source of the top graphic on this website -- and I bet you thought I was opening a beer! Hah! Don't mind the stupid hat, I stole it from my (current) roommate, and proceeded to make myself look like an ass in it for most of the night. Wooo! Rye!

[edit: Wow, do I look like an idiot!]

Playoffs have arrived!

Last night marked the beginning of crazytown in Calgary. I watched the game at my buddy Steve's place with my sister, Steve, his brother Rob and one of Rob's buddies. The game was a typically close affair (for the Flames), with Kipper being dominant and the Grinder netting the winner in OT.

Then we headed down to 17th Ave (The Red Mile) and partied with the ten or so thousand people that were out in full Flames regalia. It was a pretty good time, and the cops pretty much had let to people start partying and shut down the streets, instead of being the Gestapo that they were planning on.

I have pictures, but I can't get my computer to pull the pictures off my sister's digicam, which is gay.

Capote

It took quite a while but I finally got around to watching Capote. I can definitely see why this movie reaped all the awards and nominations it did. Shot on a paultry $7,000,000 budget, this flick was worth every cent and then some.

Philip Seymour Hoffman did an outstanding job portraying the massively eccentric Truman Capote. For the first half hour or so, I was so put off by his voice and demeaner that I almost hit the stop button, but I then found myself so enthralled that I couldn't step away.

The supporting cast was outstanding. I am growing more and more respect for Catherine Keener every time I see her in a new film (which seems to be growing more and more often as of late). Everyone else did their jobs excellently.

The director, Bennett Miller did a wonderful job of putting together this movie. Which is surprising, because the only thing he'd ever directed before was a $140,000 documentary.

If you haven't already, you have to check out this film.

Changes

I got tired of looking at my site and the pukey green color that surrounded it. I changed it to black for now as you can see, but don't expect it to last very long. I'm going to be playing with the colors over the next couple of days, but may end up switching to new software very soon. If you have some suggestions on the colors I change it to, or even software suggestions, feel free.

Toronto Star: Anti-Blogging

A link that Saskboy pointed me to today over at Werner Patels on Media is ousting the Toronto Star.

Apparently, they are going to be billing everyone $200 simply for linking directly to one of their news articles. As Werner pointed out, there is no way that the Toronto Star can claim ownership of a link on someone's personal space. Not only that, but newspapers these days rely on bloggers to send traffic their way, and the Toronto Star has got this one seriously wrong.

I would like to see them try to enforce this law and watch the blogosphere erupt on the mainstream media. Werner made another great point. It does make quite a bit of sense for them to try and limit people from simply reproducing the article on a blog, and I understand why that would bother their legal team... however, trying to stop an unlimited amount of people from driving traffic to their site. Crazy.

Rock through the window

I went out on Monday night with a couple of friends and my little sister. Since we couldn't get a cab, I drove to the bar and parked across the street. When we left the first bar, we all hopped in a more suitable (ie: not an Aveo) ride from another friend, so I just left my car at the bar, thinking all would be good.

When I woke up this morning and went to pick it up, the rear passenger window was smashed and there was a massive rock sitting in the backseat. All that was stolen is the following:

- 6 beer
- 1 pack of cigarettes
- 1 leather jacket

Good thing none of it was mine, or I would be even more pissed off. However, I can't believe that these "thieves" didn't take off with the contents of my sister's purse, which was left on the floor untouched. Or any of the other three or four jackets that I had left in the car.

So, now these idiots are going to cost me a couple hundred dollars for a few measly little items. Sweeeeet deal.

The blasted rock

Flames Car Flags

The amount of Calgary Flames car flags I'm seeing around the city is becoming obscene. Almost every second vehicle (seriously -- this is not an exaggeration) has one or two, and in some cases three or four of these flags on their car. At first I thought this was acceptable behavior, and actually thought about buying one or two for my car. However, now I feel as though it is almost expected, and, as stated earlier, it is obscene.

I'm torn. I love the Flames. I sport a jersey when I watch the games, whether it's in public or at my buddy's place. I want to support them by rocking a flag, but I don't want to be a lemming. The worst part about the whole ordeal is the amount of profit these capitalism goldmines are producing. A single car flag costs $24.99 + tax. STUPID! I was thinking they should be like $7.00.

Go Flames Go! But don't rape my wallet while you're at it.

Switch to Wordpress

So, I've done it. For the first time since June 2003 I am using blogging software other than Movable Type. I have lost touch with my HTML/PHP abilities, and was extremely unhappy with the design of my Movable Type blog.

I have got my old format backed up, so if I become unhappy with this I will change it back. Once again, however, I am torn. I didn't like my last format, because of the bad design. I'm not too fond of this generic design (K2 theme, fyi). I will play around with it over the next few days and we'll see what comes of it.

I need to hear from you guys though. Tell me if you like it, or if you want it back. Your input is paramount here, as I am embarking on a new journey. I hope I don't really regret this later.

Walk to Tim Horton's

The Esso by my house has an in-store Tim Horton's, and this, of course, is great news. I stop by every morning to pick up an extra large French Vanilla Cappuccino (avoid the lame comments, I've heard them all), the Calgary Herald and the Calgary Sun. I almost always drive -- actually, I've only walked it once before. The weird thing is, walking actually covers less distance than driving. So, since it is nice out now, I think I'll be walking in the mornings.

How I Work

Jordon Cooper made an interesting post yesterday, entitled "How I Work." So, I decided I would follow suit and let you guys know what I use, regardless of how inconsequential it may or may not be to you. So, here is the software and websites I could not do without.

  • Microsoft Outloook :: I've always been a fan of Outlook, and continue to use this workhorse for all email accounts on my domain.
  • Hotmail :: I was using this mainly for finding out when comments came in, when my blog was powered by Movable Type, but I've changed where those notifications go. I may stop using it altogether right away.
  • OpenOffice.org :: This is a brand new addition to my software arsenal. It takes some getting used to, but I am dedicated to convert from MS Office. So far I've only really toyed around with Writer, but will make the move to other suite products soon.
  • Google's Picasa :: In-computer photo storage and viewing. I've only been using Picasa for a couple of months, but like it more and more every time I open it up.
  • Mozilla Firefox :: I've been using Firefox exclusively for probably two years now. I have many issues with Internet Explorer, and find it quite annoying when I click a link in MSN Messenger, that it just decides that I want IE instead of my default Firefox. No web user should be browsing with Internet Explorer.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird :: Although not quite powerful enough for me to switch my email use to, I absolutely love its RSS capabilities and have been using it exclusively since I started blogging.
  • MSN Messenger :: IM purposes, obviously.

I think that about covers it, besides obvious things like using Google for search, or Wikipedia for gathering useless knowledge. What do you use to get through your day?

She's 12, He's 23

I know I'm definitely not the first to write about it, as a matter of fact, I'm pretty late at jumping on this amazing news story. But I just had to make my views known.

Jeremy Steinke (23) and his 12 year old girlfriend that can't be named murdered the girl's entire family in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Her parents, and her 10 year old brother.

Apparently this sick Steinke asshole met the 12 year old in a goth chat room.

A couple of things about this case strike me as crazy. First is the obvious: this sick 23 year old decides that it's ok for him to carry on any kind of a relationship with a 12 year old, let alone dating her. How he managed to convince his friends (if he actually had any) and family that this was normal behavior and is quite acceptable is beyond me.

Apparently, on Steinke's blog (which was pulled by Nexopia a day or so after he was arrested) he wrote a poem about how the young girl's parents just did not understand their relationship, and how he wanted to slit their throats because of it.

What kind of a sick, twisted, disturbed fuck would ever believe that a 12 year old girl's parents would actually think it was ok for a 23 year old to date her. I'm scared for the girl just thinking about whether or not they were sexually active. Jeez! Can you imagine if your 12 year old brought home a 23 year old girl/boyfriend? Even if my 12 year old's partner was 18 I'd lose my mind.

Second they met online. I've always just how often it happened -- an old predator picks up a young, unsuspecting prey on the internet and abuses her. And I'm sure it happens all the time, but this sick fuck went too far. He picked up his prey, probably with relative ease, and then decided to pursue an actual relationship with her. Disgusting!

Apparently the maximum sentence the girl can receive is six years. Which is ok, because I highly doubt that she had much of a hand in the planning, or execution for that matter, of the murder. On this sick Steinke bastard -- I almost wish we had the death penalty, because this kid deserves to die. However, I hope he gets the book and ends up with life with no chance for 25. The sad thing is, he'll probably serve 7 years then get out on parole.
